Card House, 2016–18
Site-specific installation series with sculpturally formed t-shirts
The Card House series is an array of site-specific installations utilizing handcrafted t-shirt modules placed in different structural arrangements and spatial relations. Each t-shirt module is carefully shaped to the form of corrugated iron, a ubiquitous building material associated with industrial and vernacular architecture, mimicking the materiality of the houses in which the shirts’ producers often dwell. The series was initiated during preliminary research for an early-2016 artist residency in Dhaka examining the interrelated iron and ready-made garment industries in Bangladesh, both forming and formed by international economic relations. The convergence of these two production flows served as a starting point for understanding global supply chains and for tracing their effects on lived space.
